Peace and Disarmament Education Project - Cambodia

Problem Statement:
A culture of violence
Misuse of SALW negatively affects local security, thus jeopardizing development and post-conflict reconstruction.
Project Background:
The WGWR PE Project launched its a 3-year strategic plan that involves material production, public seminars/trainings, cross-sectoral collaboration and a national media campaign. PE successfully completed 5 seminars/trainings, massive materials production, media campaign and pilot project in Kampong Thom province. This project proposes to work with schools in Kg. Thom and Kg. Chhnang provinces on peace and disarmament education awareness.
Project goal and purpose:
Overall goal: to change from culture of violence where the use of weapons to solve problem prevails, to one where problems are solved peaceably.
Purpose: target groups able to consider the negative effects of small arms-light weapons possession and use and indicate a commitment to nonviolent problem solving and conflict resolution.
Project Strategies:
WGWR will cooperate with partner organizations to carry out the project to increase impact and effectiveness. WGWR also will coordinate NGO activities and encourage greater involvement in peace building activities.
Develop the materials, seminars and trainings to strengthen understanding of small arms and, in the long-term, build community relations and peace.
The project will seek to continue cooperating with national and local government e.g. ministry of education, provincial education department and schools.
Project Outputs:
- Peace Education Partners Establishment
- A variety of materials and tools on small arms reduction and peace are created
- Small Arms and Peace education seminar and training for teachers
- Community small arms and peace awareness events are implemented
- Non-formal peace education program is provided for students and youth
- Peace and small arms media campaign developed
